The China-Hong Kong Northwest Railway is 30.5km long, linking Kowloon to Tuen Mun in Hong Kong,and worth 51.7billion HK$ investment. At the time of construction, it was the largest of the six railway construction projects in Hong Kong as well as the largest infrastructure project in Hong Kong.
Characteristics and Significance of the Project:
The Hong Kong Northwest Railway, also known as the Kowloon-Guangzhou west railway, was put into operation on December 20, 2003; a 30.5km long railway line linking Kowloon to Tuen Mun in the new territories. It passes through the sections of Castle Peak Road and Tin Shui Wai, with a total of 12 stations, and an average annual passenger capacity of 150 million. The construction of the Railway line plays an important role in the history of the development of Hong Kong, which not only solves the difficulties of the residents along the railway, but also builds a communication bridge between the urban area of Kowloon and the people in the remote New Territories. This helps in breaking through the barriers of mountains, and bringing new opportunities for the economic development of Hong Kong.
