Macao International Airport is situated off the coast of Taipa Island opposite Jijing Mountain, , constructed on the artificially reclaimed island covering an area of 1.14 square kilometers, making it the second International Airport built on reclaimed land in the world. The whole project encompasses three major works: the runway area, the terminal area, and the two linking bridges to the mainland to the north and south, worth a total investment of 912.5 million US dollars. The Airport was designed in conformance to CAT international standards and is suitable for the Boeing 747-400. The CHEC won the bidding and contract for the artificial island reclamation for the Airport outside the terminal area, the design and construction of the North-South linking bridges to the mainland, and the design and construction of the runway as well as the taxiway, worth the total contract value of $650 million US dollars.
Characteristics and Significance of the Project:
As an important bridge between Macao and the rest of the world, Macao International Airport was designed in conformance to to the CAT international standards and has built-in main freight route from Macao to the overseas markets. The Airport is also the headquarters of Macao airlines and helicopter Airlines and the Asia Pacific Airlines. It is also the main operating base of Jetstar Asia Airlines, a commercial charter company. As an important bridge between the Pearl River Delta and the rest of the world, Macao International Airport operates 24 hours a day and is one of the air transportation transit stations between the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan, and is one of the few airports in the world with direct flights to North Korea.
